Welcome
Tena koutou katoa. Welcome to Johnsonville School. Since beginning as principal here at Johnsonville School in October 2012, I have been very impressed by the school’s friendly children, and welcoming staff and parents.
The New Zealand Curriculum encourages schools to create their own local ‘flavour’. What does this look like at our school?
At Johnsonville School we believe in educating the ‘whole child’. This means that while we work hard to make sure our children achieve in reading, writing and maths, we also think it important to provide a range of sporting and cultural opportunities that encourage and extend. These include sports teams, Te Reo Maori classes, kapahaka, orchestra, choir and music groups. We are fortunate to have a heated, covered swimming pool and expansive bush clad grounds. Our school is also privileged to have a Special Education Unit on site. Our special education children are an integral part of our school community.
Here at Johnsonville we believe that learning should have a clear purpose. We strive to make learning experiences relevant by linking them, through a guided enquiry approach, to local, national and international events, and real life contexts. We aim to be active and to have fun while we learn.
At our school we look towards the future. While we continue to make the best of traditional approaches to teaching and learning, we are also determined to embrace change and equip our children with skills that will last them a lifetime. We are currently focussing on the development of our computer resources, with the aim of children using a range of devices as tools for learning.
But all of this doesn’t just happen on its own! Our school has a committed, able staff and a hugely supportive parent community. It’s our people that make the school strong and give us much to be proud of.
