Road Patrol
Johnsonville School has a School Patrol operating at the Ironside Road crossing from 8.30 to 9.00 a.m. and from 2.55 to 3.15 p.m. The patrol is made up of Year Six students, supervised by an adult. We encourage our Year Six students to take on this important responsibility. They are given the opportunity to volunteer to be trained by a Police Officer in their last Term of Year Five. When trained students are wearing their official jackets and are using the Road Patrol signs they are permitted by law to stop traffic.
If the weather is such that it makes using the signs unsafe, the adult in charge makes the decision to send the students out as Traffic Wardens. Traffic Wardens wear the official jackets but do not use the signs. They are then not permitted to stop traffic but to hold back students planning to cross until the road is clear enough to let the students cross.
School Patrols
Provide pedestrian control at specified pedestrian crossings using signs to stop traffic while children cross. Children under adult supervision normally operate school patrols. The School patrol is the only system that operates under legislation, and the only system that is empowered to stop vehicles.
