Our Vision… At Johnsonville School we will be empowered to create a healthy, peaceful and sustainable environment for our community. We will create an environment that we will preserve for future generations. |
ABOUT ENVIRO SCHOOLS
“The Enviroschools program aims to equip young people with the competencies they need to be leaders in sustainability” (Enviroschools Handbook, 2008).

There are five guiding principles for Enviroschools. The 2011 Enviro Group worked on developing our own school definitions of what they mean to us, in our own words. You can read these below!
THE ENVIRO GROUP
The Enviro Group is formed at the beginning of each year. It is a group of enthusiastic and committed students from all year levels at Johnsonville School. We meet every week for an afternoon, and during some lunch times.
During term 3 we worked on our School Vision Map. The vision map is “a broad picture that everyone in the school agrees is the basis for creating a sustainable school environment.” It shows what the school community feels and thinks about the school environment.
In the third week of term 4 2011, we went through the reflection process for our Bronze Award. We reflected on evidence of the guiding principles in our school and on the bronze descriptive paragraph. The team (of teachers, students and Enviroschools representatives) decided we fit with the criteria. We are now looking forward to our next steps for 2012.
Some of the other things the Enviro Group are up to are… composting, gardening, communicating with other Enviroschools during the postcard projects, planning school events such as World Environment Day, cooking and baking using our garden produce…
THE GUIDING PRINCIPLES
|
Empowered Students Students are given responsibility to do things their way. We work together to make good choices and plan for the future. We share our knowledge and ideas with others. |
|
Respect for diversity of people and cultures We acknowledge and celebrate different cultures and abilities. We respect and appreciate people, no matter how different they are to us. |
|
Learning for sustainability We do our best to save our planet for the future. We learn about how to sustain and preserve the environment. We take what we have learnt, put it into action and teach it to other people. |
|
Māori Perspectives We consider Māori perspectives, as we want to protect Māori culture. We do this by learning Te Reo and respecting Māori perspectives. It is part of our school. |
